La Pietra Renews Green Party “Dark Earth Hour” Call;
Urges People to Cut Back on Unnecessary Travel, Too
===================================================
Clerk Candidate, Michigan Greens Will Mark 3rd Thursday
of Month by Turning Off Unnecessary Lights, Power 9-10pm

County Leaders Can Further JONAH’s Transportation-Equity
Goal by Saving Energy for the People for Necessary Trips

John Anthony La Pietra, the Green Party of Michigan (GPMI)
candidate for Calhoun County Clerk-Register of Deeds, is
inviting the county’s people and its local governments to
celebrate “Dark Earth Hour” again this week, on the third
Thursday of October.

This time, John is calling on the community not only to
turn off all non-essential lights and electrical appliances
9-10pm on Thursday, but also to cut back on unnecessary
travel.

“Transportation makes up 1/4 or more of our nation’s energy
consumption
,” John notes.  “It’s hard to use less energy if
we ignore that big a chunk of the total.”  The original
purpose of GPMI’s resolution was to expand on the World
Wildlife Fund’s annual “Earth Hour” and raise awareness
of the need to reduce energy consumption.

John also thinks that cutting unnecessary use of energy
for transportation would fit in neatly with the commitments
to transportation equity featured at Sunday’s “Faith and
Democracy Community Celebration” at Lakeview Middle School,
sponsored by JONAH and its affiliated organizations.

“One way community leaders can show leadership on this issue
is to make fewer unnecessary trips — especially trips for
pleasure out of state, or out of the country.  Even if they
can afford such trips, others cannot,” John suggests.  “And
one round-trip drive to Florida is enough to take our county’s
neediest 1% a mile to a vital job, doctor’s appointment, or
child-care site . . . and home again.”

John himself has tried to combine tasks whenever he drives
as part of his campaign.  For example, he would not make
a separate trip to Battle Creek City Hall Thursday night
to attend the County Commission meeting — but he will be
across the street at First United Methodist Church earlier
that evening anyway for another of JONAH’s voter-education
workshops.

John continues to present copies of GPMI’s original Dark
Earth Hour announcement and resolution to meetings of
local government boards across the county.  This week’s
planned visits to Clarendon and Newton Townships would
mean he has brought his “For the People” campaign *to*
the people in every city, village, and township.

confirms the 1/4 share of total US energy consumption for
transportation is visible on line at
