OBITUARIES

Joan Von Holten, age 65, of Albion passed away Monday September 1, 2008 at Heartland Hospice of Jackson, Michigan. She was born July 31, 1943 in Huntington, Indiana to John Jacob and Edythe Arnetta (Hillegas) Von Holten.

She was a graduate of Garrett Indiana High School, received her B.S from Ball State University- Muncie, Indiana; and her M.A from Central Michigan University. She taught Math and Science at Albion High School for 33 years from 1965 until her retirement in June of 1998. She also was a Tennis Coach at the High School. She was a member of the Michigan Education Association; Albion Education Association; Calhoun County Genealogical Society; and was the Treasurer of Sheridan Township from 1997-2002.

Survivors include: mother, Edythe Arnetta Von Holten of Battle Creek, Mich; sister, Arnetta Von Holten of Albion; two nieces, Dawn Wainscott of Hillsdale, Mich, and Ariana Woods of Indiana;
three nephews, John A. Von Holten-Salt Lake City, Utah, Tony Von Holten of Auburn, Indiana, and Ricky Ransbottom Jr. of Albion; and special friend, Marilyn Hennon of Albion.

She was preceded in death by her father, John Jacob Von Holten; brother, Jon Von Holten and a sister, Judy Von Holten.

According to her wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be a memorial service Saturday, September 27 at 11 a.m. at the Finley Drive Chapel of the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home 811 Finley Drive Albion, Michigan, with Rev. Walter H. Nichols Jr. officiating. Visitation for family and friends will be from 10 a.m.-11 a.m.  A private burial of cremains will take place at Riverside Cemetery in Albion.

Paul J. Meza, age 64, of Albion, formerly of Marshall died Monday, September 1, 2008 at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo.

The family will receive friends at the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home, 103 E. Mansion St., Marshall,
from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, September 3.

A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on. Thursday, September 4 at the funeral home.

Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to the American Diabetes Association.

Frank A. Laskey, 80, of Homer, passed away Saturday, August 30, 2008 at the Life Span-Good Samaritan Hospice Residence in Battle Creek.  Born February 21, 1928 in Detroit, MI, he was the son of Densil and Helen (Murphy) Laskey. Moving to Homer in 1970, Frank worked at T & S Equipment Co. (Vestil) for 15 years and also at L & L Auto Repair since 1990.  He belonged to of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Union City and the Knights of Columbus, Bronson. He was formerly a member of the Taylor, MI  Moose Lodge. Gardening, yard work, and helping his children with 4-H projects were favorite hobbies of Frank’s, but he most especially loved spending time with his grandchildren.

On November 24, 1962 he married Joan (Baker), and she survives, along with two daughters, Carol (Jesse) Spradlin) of Union City, Denise Laskey of Homer; three sons, John (Tammy) Laskey of Tekonsha, Gary (Debbie) Laskey of Tekonsha, Richard (Lisa) Laskey of Homer; three brothers,  Don Laskey of Taylor, Chuck Laskey of Mesa , AZ, and  Jerry Laskey  of Prescott, MI; 10 grandchildren, three great-grandchilddren

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Ralph Laskey.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, September 3, 11 a.m., at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, Union City, with Father Brian Stanley officiating. Memorials to Life Span Good Samaritan Hospice would be appreciated.

Joseph W. Armstrong, Jr., 65, of Albion, passed away on Thursday, August 28, 2008, at his residence. He was born December 22, 1942 in Century, Florida  to Joseph W. and Mary Lorena (Sampson) Armstrong, Sr.  Joseph was a resident of Albion for most of his life and graduated from Washington Gardner High School. He married Clara Ann Robinson who preceded him in death. Joseph served our country in the United States Navy. He worked various jobs in the area and did a lot of handy work He enjoyed people, music and poetry.

Survivors include: two daughters, Kimberly Swinton and Teresa Robinson, both of Albion;                                                                                             father, Joseph W. Armstrong, Sr. of Albion; sisters, Debra Armstrong and Gladys Armstrong Smith, both of Battle Creek; granddaughter, Shayla Johnson and great-granddaughter, Jashayla Castro.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Lorena Armstrong and two brothers, James and Al Armstrong.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, September 4, at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta . There will be no visitation.
